Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the diseased or damaged hip is replaced with a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement may sound like a major procedure but, with the advancements in surgical technology and pain management, it can now be done on an outpatient basis. In fact, it is one of the procedures routinely performed here at North Naples Surgery Center in Naples, Florida.
Nevertheless, because of its inherent risks, a hip replacement does require planning and preparation to ensure a safe and successful recovery.
Here are some bits of information to help you adequately prepare for a hip replacement surgery at our facility:
Before Your Surgery
As with any type of surgery, it is important for you to review and closely follow any preoperative instructions your doctor gives you. As a safety measure, you will not be allowed to drive a motor vehicle following your surgery, so you must arrange to have someone drive you to and from the surgery center.
If you get ill or happen to have last-minute changes prior to your scheduled appointment for surgery, please contact us immediately, so we can reschedule your procedure.
On the Day of Your Surgery
Be sure to bring your insurance card(s) and any forms that your doctor requested with you. Leave all your valuables, including jewelry and watches, at home, and do not wear contact lenses or makeup.
With your and your surgeon’s approval, you will be administered with the appropriate type of anesthesia. If you have any questions before your surgery, ask your surgeon or anesthesiologist/ certified registered nurse anesthesiologist: (CRNA), who will be happy to answer them. Also, be sure to talk about any medications and/or vitamins you are taking and any allergies you may have to certain medications.
Following Your Surgery
Right after your surgery, you will be taken to a fully-equipped recovery room where your blood pressure and pulse will be closely monitored by a nurse. The length of time you will have to spend in recovery will depend on the extent of your surgery and/or the anesthesia you were given.
You may need to stay up to three days after surgery, depending on how swiftly you progress. Once you are able to walk longer distances and have made consistent progress, your surgeon will allow you to go home.
Before you leave our surgery center, one of our nurses will review the written summary of your doctor’s postoperative instructions with you. When you return home, be sure to carefully follow those specific instructions, regarding diet, rest, activities, and medications. If, at any time, you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact your attending surgeon or us.
